SLOUCHING TOWARDS LAWLESSNESS We've arrived at an interesting moment: The eavesdropping story appears likely to give us a window into the souls of public officials--to let us know which officials are truly committed to the rule of law, and which are willing to stomach the idea of unchecked executive power.

So far, President Bush, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) are in the latter camp.

In the coming days, CONTRAPOSITIVE will be curious to learn where other prominent figures stand.
